The route itself is actually very simple: from the start in Manitou Springs one have to run to the top of Pikes Peak, 4299m, and back again, an elevation gain and loss of almost 2400m. But I knew what I was up to, having climbed Pikes Peak the year before in snowy conditions plus one more time two weeks before, so I was pretty sure that I would finish the race, the only question being in what time.
