We had hoped to fly in to the district capital of Skardu, but due to the usual unsettled flying weather in Northern Areas we ended up driving up to Skardu by bus on the Karakorum Highway instead. In Skardu we the next day met our porters, the local strong and tenacious Balti porters, and the following days we jeeped up to Askole where the walk-in proper was to start.
