There was just no reason for continuing further up the trail this day. We better had to go back to Lone Pine to check in at the motel and buy some supplies for the following day's planned attempt of climbing Mount Whitney. We did make the attempt the following day, but surprisingly enough there was still too much snow on the upper slopes to ascend in a reasonable time.
