I caught up with my mate again at Skeleton Point, now 2000 ft. below the canyon rim. This is as far as one is advised to go on a day hike, but even though I had stopped several times to take pictures we had made a good time so far. Thus there was no discussion about continuing down to the canyon bottom 2700 ft. below.
