Since the last hike in 2009 I had been struck by a blood clot in 2013, and the previous year I had received a knee prosthesis in the same knee which had been damaged in that expedition to Nepal in 1997. I then decided that this walk should be done wearing some of my old clothes, which had followed me on many previous trips.
