This was July 2014, and I had arrived in Australia to visit my friend Paul there. More than a year earlier we had started planning to participate in a marathon in the bushland near Uluru, the most famous mountain (or 'stone') in Australia, more known as Ayers Rock. But shortly after the decision about participating was made I was struck by a blood clot, and no longer able to run a marathon.
