I didn't know exactly what these shorts were made of, for there were no tags in them to tell about neither the fabric nor the size. But it could be very right that they were a size Medium and thus made to fit a guy with a waist of 33 or 34 inches. I normally have a waist of 35 inches but like my lycra gear to fit tight, so normally a size Medium feels good on me.
