The next day we entered the penitentes nightmare. We were climbing from Base Camp up to Camp 1 in 4900m, and the last 200 metres up we could choose between one track up a loose gravel slope or another up through the penitentes. We were advised to choose the latter, but as we got higher, so got the penitentes, and half way up we lost orientation.
