I had been sleeping the night in a motel in the outskirts of Red Bluff and left the motel in my rental car, heading for Highway 36, known as the most crooked highway in California. Winding my way up Salmon Mountains, on the spur of the moment, I turned up a dirt road, driving deeper into the forest.
