This was July 2007, and I had come this long way to the outskirts of Europe as I wanted to climb Elbrus, the highest mountain in geographical Europe. We had had the intention of making the village of Terskol the base for our climb, but only the following day we learned that we had arrived in Cheget instead, a few kilometers downvalley from Terskol.
