It took almost three hours to leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen and walk the icy roads up to Esterbergalm, the guesthouse in the middle of Estergebirge. Sure the guesthouse was open, the rooms crammed with guests who, like me, had made use of the good weather to go for a day hike in the mountains.
