The going was easy up the now well-known glacier, and after some hours we arrived at the final slope up to Camp 1. Here we had to cross up through a band of so-called penitentes, a maze of sharp ice towers only found here near Equator. Although only two or three metres high these towers may cause serious navigation problems.
