We had planned the climb of Mount Whitney as a day trip, so very early in the morning we left our motel in Lone Pine to drive up to Whitney Portal, starting the hike up the trail in the light of our headtorches. But it didn't take long before the sun rose on a clear blue sky and we could pack in our headlamps.
