The solution appeared to be climbing the mountain by the old traditional pilgrim trail up from Kawaguchi-ko. We would leave from here in the afternoon, making the whole almost 3.000m ascent during the night to arrive at the summit late in the morning, in this way paying a decent respect to this famous mountain.
